U.2 Drive supports SATA SSD B Key 2280 2260 2242 M.2 2 slot to 2.5” U.2 HDD drive Adapter enclosure with Hardware RAID 0 and 1
Diarts production 2.5” U.2 HDD Adapter, it allows to add 2 slot SATA SSD B key M.2. It supports 2280 2260 2242 B key M.2 spec. Therefore 2 slot SATA SSD, that it works Hardware RAID 0 and 1. Because of U.2 HDD Adapter supports total 10G transfer rate. The speed is low then NVMe, but it is fast then SATA spec. Whey we designs Low Speed U.2 HDD Adapter. It is cost effect; the total cost will be much low vs U.2 drive NVMe, and it will come next U.3 drive. Marketing, it has few kinds storage – IDE, SATA, SISI, SAS, SATA Express, NVMe, U.2, PCIe, …..
Why is U.2 drive
2.5” U.2 drive, it supports high speed up to 30Gbps transfer rate. The cost is very expensive. We design SATA SSD B key to U.2 spec. The transfer rate supports 10Gbps, The transfer rate is lower, but It is much high them SATA SSD.
Three type U.2 drive VS PCIe drive VS NVMe drive
Different with U.2 drive and NVMe drive. From the spec U.2 supports PCIe x 4 lanes spec. NVMe has two type one is PCIe x 4 lanes spec, other one is PCIe x 2 lanes spec. The different is transfer rate. That is only different.
SSD U.2 drive VS SATA drive – 2.5” HDD drive
Here SATA and U.2, U.2 uses SFF8639 connector, SATA uses SATA 22 pin connector. The connector is different.
ASM1062R-25U2 drive VS standard U.2 drive
ASM1062R-25U2 is PCIe interface storages; it is not standard NVMe spec. That is why it can use SATA SSD B key for storage. From SATA SSD to PCIe. It can say not standard NVMe storage
What the storage transfer rate
In the marketing, it has few kinds storage – IDE, SATA, SISI, SAS, SATA Express, NVMe, U.2, PCIe, …..
The main interface is SATA and NVMe, How about SATA Express, U.2 and SAS. SATA Express would be main interface after SATA, but the transfer rate is between SATA and NVMe. SATA Express becomes has no position in the marketing.
NVMe – PCIe x 4 and PCIe x 2
NVMe has two type spec, one is PCIe x 4 lanes it supports 30Gbps. One is supports PCIe x 2 lanes it will be 15Gbps transfer rate. Both supports with M key spec.
6G SATA
SATA 6G is SATA III spec, SATA I 1.5G, SATA II 3G, and SATA III 6G. SATA III is last version of SATA. Why it does not go up, because of spindle speed. But SATA also go for SSD spec, The transfer rate has been up. But it is SATA III 6G spec.
ASMedia ASM1062R-25U2 – 10G
Designs ASM1062R-25U.2, it uses SATA SSD B key spec SATA III 6G * 2, and with U.2 interface. It can supports transfer rate up to 10G
Connector type SFF-8639, SFF-8643, SATA 22 pin
2.5″ U.2, SATA Express, SAS, SATA, and IDE all use different connector. It is about spec of transfer rate. Some is Serial type transfer rate or Parallel type transfer rate. That is different from connector.
Before Storage is Parallel type spec, the time uses 44 pin connector. But the transfer rate cannot up. Then Serial type storage into marketing – SATA. SATA uses 22 pin connector only 7 pin for data transfer, 15 pin is power input, it supports 12V, 5V and 3.3V. Serial type storage has SAS, SATA Express, NVMe, and U.2. But each spec has own connector.
Host Port connector – SFF-8643
Drive 2.5 U.2 has two type connector, one is Host side(on M/B) one is device side(on U.2 HDD). SFF-8643 is U.2 drive’s Host side connector, it is on M/B.
U.2 HDD drive connector – SFF-8639
HDD U.2 device side on HDD uses SFF-8639, it looks alike SATA 22 pin, but it is more pin them 22 pin. It also comes with power input for 12V and 5V too
SATA :connector – SATA 22 pin
It SATA connector is SATA 22 pin, it has 7 pin for data transfer, and 15 pin for power. It supports 12V 5V and 3.3V. some of SATA HDD needs 12V 5V such as 3.5” SATA HDD. 2.5” SATA HDD needs 5V power input. SATA SSD it needs 5V or 3.3V. It is depend on SATA SSD suppliers.
How will be next after U.2?
Next U.2 drive has been supports 30Gbps transfer rate, it is highest speed so far. Even use PCIe x 4 lanes spec, it is just same as 30Gbps. In marketing it has U.3 drive information.
It will come U.3 drive
U.3 drive will come, I think it will come, 30G transfer rate, it is good for most of people, But we always wants highest speed. U.3 drive speed will go up. It will same as PCIe Gen 4 spec. Because U.3 spec is PCIe x 4 lanes too.
U.3 connector
Connector will use with U.3 device side. It is same as SFF-8639 on Driver side. But pin out has been different.
How about host side, it does not find out host side information. I guess it would be not SFF-8643.
PCIe Gen 4 and Gen 5 spec
About PCIe Gen 4 spec per lane is 16Gbps transfer rate, U.3 drive spec will be 64 Gbps transfer rate.
How about PCIe Gen 5, the spec shows 32Gbps per lanes. If it has U.4 drive or NVMe Gen 5 the transfer rate is over 100Gbps.
Will SATA Drive going?
The SATA drive will be – keep in marketing, but transfer rate will not keep going. It will not have SATA 4 in marketing
About SATA SSD, HDD will keep in marketing
Yes, it will keep in marketing, and SATA has two type one is SSD one is with spindle speed, Both different, but it will keep in marketing.
Storage will move from SATA SSD to NVMe, PCIe, U.2, U.3, ….
High end use will move from SATA to NVMe or U.2 or U.3, PCIe Gen 4 or PCIe Gen 5, … Some people are looking with newest or high end products, Now U.2 is fastest, but it will keep to releases more fast and more people will move to newest spec and products.
