RS-485(EIA-485)
RS-485, also known as EIA-485, is a standard defining the electrical characteristics of drivers and receivers for use in serial communications systems.
It can be used over long distances and in electrically noisy environments. Multiple receivers may be connected to such a network in a linear, multidrop bus. These characteristics make RS-485 useful in industrial control systems and similar applications.
PCI Express
PCI Express, officially abbreviated as PCIe, is a high-speed serial computer expansion bus standard, designed to replace PCI and AGP bus standards. It supports higher speed, backward compatibility, and hot-swapping.
PCIe is just like a bus, transporting data to and fro on a fixed road. As long as the bandwidth (road) is wider, the speed would be faster. The PCI Express standard defines slots and connectors for multiple widths: ×1, ×4, ×8, and ×16.
PCIe ver. | X1 | X4 | X8 | X16 |
1.0 | 250 MB/s | 1 GB/s | 2 GB/s | 4 GB/s |
2.0 | 500 MB/s | 2 GB/s | 4 GB/s | 8 GB/s |
3.0 | 984.6 MB/s | 3.938 GB/s | 7.877 GB/s | 15.754 GB/s |
The PCIe sockets on motherboard are usually x1 and x16. x1 is normally for general use. x16 is often used for VGA or other high performance interface cards.

Most of new display cards use PCIe standard now. The second half of 2017, PCI-SIG released the standard of 4.0. Comparing with the 8GT/s transfer rate of 3.0, the speed of 4.0 improved twice up to 16GT/s, supporting the application of higher performance and lower-power consumption.
4.0 | 1.969 GB/s | 7.877 GB/s | 15.754 GB/s | 31.508 GB/s |
The average interval of the new release is 4 years. However, the release of 4.0 was after 7 years from 3.0. Until now 2018, PCI-SIG determined the release of 5.0 on 2019. There haven’t had any products about PCIe 4.0 standards. People may think that 4.0 standard is just for the transition period. One of the reasons is 3.0 standard met most of the demand in transmission speed. The great advance of AI caused increasing the demand in higher speed. The release of 4.0 standard postponed until now. Though 3.0 is enough for most of devices, the advance of technology is rapid. What kinds of new tech will be developed, what is the performance of PCIe 4.0 products, and the release of 5.0 standard still catches people’s eyes. Let’s wait and see.
